ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Harris Corp. RF Communications Division, Rochester, N.Y., has demonstrated a software-defined radio that complies with the Joint Tactical Radio System architecture, which the U.S. Department of Defense has named “Radio of the Future”.
The Defense Department’s mission is development of a family of radios that can be re-programmed with software and also share a common digital architecture applicable to multiple platforms and supportive of multiple waveforms.
“The JMTR on-air demonstration is unique because it illustrates Harris’ ability to validate the JTRS Software Communications Architecture for battery-powered radio platforms,” the company said in its announcement May 29.
“The SCA is a specific set of rules, methods and design criteria for implementing software re-programmable digital radios, and (it) will become the basis for all future DOD tactical radio acquisitions.”
