Singapore maintains 3G requirements

SINGAPORE—The Singapore telecom regulator will not allow third-generation infrastructure sharing on the island nation and will maintain its deadline for nationwide rollout for its 3G licensees.

The Infocomm Development Authority said its decision to not allow infrastructure sharing was based on industry views and comments on the difficulties and limited scope associated with sharing equipment in Singapore. In addition, IDA said after monitoring developments in foreign markets, its rollout deadline of Dec. 31, 2004, for nationwide 3G services will not be pushed back.

IDA said countries in Europe and Scandinavia, in particular, have maintained their 3G rollout requirements. “In addition, a number of their telco operators have also since deployed 3G networks or are on schedule to meet their deployment requirements,” IDA said.
