STOCKHOLM, Sweden—The pending merger between Sweden’s Telia AB and Finland’s Sonera Corp. could be just the beginning of Nordic consolidation, with international press reports quoting a Sweden government official as saying Telia is in discussions with additional operators, including Denmark’s TDC Corp., about more mergers.
Although no deals are near completion, Bjorn Rosengren, Sweden’s industry minister, said talks continue, and there is strong interest among the operators.
Telia has seen its share prices drop nearly 20 percent since announcing its merger with Sonera in March, putting the deal into question. However, the Swedish company said last week, the merger is on track to be completed during the third quarter.
A proposed merger between Telia and TDC last year failed to materialize.
