CenturyTel founder dies

MONROE, La.—CenturyTel’s founder and chairman of the board Clarke M. Williams died June 5 at age 80 following a lengthy illness.

Williams grew CenturyTel from the Oak Ridge Telephone Company, given to him by his parents as a wedding gift upon his return from World War II in 1946. Williams served on several boards in the Oak Ridge community and received numerous awards for his community service.

Glen Post, who has served as CenturyTel’s vice chairman, president and chief executive officer since 1992, will assume Williams’ responsibilities. “Mr. Williams spent his lifetime building a company that reflects his personal values,” said Post. “We work hard to make life better for the people in the communities we serve, and that’s a wonderful legacy for him.”
