Wireless data industry sees consolidation

ATLANTA—Consolidation moves across the wireless data industry continue to hit in waves, this time with three companies announcing sales or mergers.

O2wireless Solutions Inc., which offers outsourced telecommunications services, announced it will merge with telecommunications infrastructure provider Baran Group Ltd. Under the merger, which is expected to close in November, Baran will extend its line of credit to o2wireless and will give it an initial advance of $5 million.

“By joining Baran we will be adding the technology, human resources and capital needed to continue upgrading and expanding our full suite of turn-key services throughout the United States,” said Andrew Roscoe, o2wireless’ president and chief executive officer.

Separately, InfoLogix announced it acquired Optasia, which specializes in interactive learning technology. InfoLogix said the move will help it to provide training assistance to its customers.

InfoLogix provides mobile wireless computing hardware and consulting services to health care, industrial and transportation markets.

Finally, wireless infrastructure software provider Extended Systems announced an elaborate deal to sell its wholly owned Singapore subsidiary to a holding company co-owned by the subsidiary’s management. Under the deal, the Singapore company will act as an independent distributor for Extended Systems’ products in Southeast Asia.

“The new corporate structure will allow us to proactively market hardware solutions based on Extended Systems’ technology,” said Hari Ramachandran, the general manager of the Singapore business.

Other consolidation moves in recent months include Openwave Systems Inc.’s acquisition of SignalSoft Corp. and EarthLink’s purchase of OmniSky Corp.
