LONDON—Orange SA said it accepted a UMTS license in Luxembourg following the country’s “beauty contest” for licenses, making Orange a new entrant in the market when it launches a UMTS network.
Last month, Tele2 said it also won a UMTS license in Luxembourg from the country’s Ministry of Telecommunications. Tele2 offers mobile service in Luxembourg under the brand name Tango. Tango said it received the most points in the contest and therefore was the first to choose its frequencies. The company said content for the network will be provided primarily by Tango Sunshine Radio and Tango TV.
P&T Luxembourg also operates a GSM 900/1800 MHz and GPRS network in the market.
Orange said it has 12 UMTS licenses in Europe.
