TASHKENT, Uzbekistan—Ericsson signed a contract to supply a GSM 1800 MHz network to the Uzdunrobita carrier, which operates TDMA technology and has recently received a GSM 900/1800 MHz license for the whole of Uzbekistan.
Ericsson will supply a switchboard, a controller, base stations, the MINI-LINK radio relay system and other equipment. The sum of the contract was not disclosed. The network is to be launched in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent and the surrounding region in the third quarter of 2002. It is to expand to other regions of the Central Asian republic in the future.
Uzdunrobita has been operating since 1992 and covers the whole territory of Uzbekistan. It accounts for 35 percent of Uzbek mobile-phone users.
