MELBOURNE, Australia-With both business and consumers’ interest in using mobile data growing, Optus and SingTel have launched a worldwide search for “killer” mobile applications that will revolutionize the mobile industry. Their search, dubbed “the Asia Java Mobile Challenge,” is aimed at developers with innovative applications for mobile phones using JAVA 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME), a computer language used for writing programs for a new generation of mobile phones.
“Australian Java developers will get the chance to show their ingenuity on the world stage by entering the Challenge,” said Optus Mobile Managing Director Allen Lew. “We are sure Australian developers will have lots of ideas. Our vision is to introduce new services that our customers find useful. Applications relating to lifestyle, entertainment, business, information and games are welcomed.”
The joint initiative, which includes Sun Microsystems and SingTel’s regional partners AIS, Bharti, Globe Telecom and Telkomsel, runs from 17 June to 16 August, with finalists’ concepts tested in a public trial and winners awarded commercial deals.
The challenge is backed also by mobile players Motorola, Nokia, Siemens and Sony Ericsson.
