Mitsubishi develops prototype WLAN technology, partners with Detecon

TOKYO-Mitsubishi Corp. said it has developed a prototype system for wireless LAN technology called Moteran, which will allow devices like laptops, personal digital assistants and cellular phones to operate without base stations or switches.

“Unlike conventional communications, Moteran allows each terminal to act as a relay point communicating with other terminals without the requirement for infrastructure. (and) enables the establishment of self-organizing and de-centralized networks when the density of terminals is sufficient for relay communications,” said the company in a statement.

Mitsubishi outsourced the technology to Detecon, the engineering and consulting affiliate of Deutsche Telekom and will establish a joint venture company with Detecon in Germany to commercialize and supply the technology.
