JOHANNEBSBURG, South Africa-MTN South Africa announced its General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) pricing strategy and some of the initial applications that will be available at the time of commercial launch. However, the pricing will not be implemented until October.
The operator is currently offering free GPRS use. The company reported that more than 20 percent of the potential market has started using the service. MTN expects the uptake to be greater now that it has announced early services, including games, messaging, browsing and a plethora of other applications and information services.
Sifiso Dabengwa, managing director of MTN South Africa, said: “We are not launching a technology here, but an enabler. MTN is passionate to enhance the lives and businesses of its customers, and we believe MTNdataLIVE will allow innovative, simple, cost-effective mobile data solutions to become a reality. We are announcing commercial applications, but will not begin billing for several months to allow a greater uptake of the services.”
