REDMOND, Wash.-AT&T Wireless reported 417,000 net customer additions for the second quarter, well below previous guidance and analysts’ estimates of around 550,000 net additions for the quarter. The carrier blamed a large part of the shortfall on resale partner WorldCom Inc.’s decision to exit its wireless business.
Average revenue per user for the quarter fell 5.3 percent from the second quarter last year to $60.40, while customer churn dropped from 2.9 percent last year to 2.4 percent this year.
Total revenues for the quarter increased from $3.4 billion last year to $3.9 billion this year, but an increase in operating expenses resulted in net income falling from $229 million last year, a return of 9 cents per share, to $19 million this year, a return of 1 cent per share.
