800 MHz interference strategy reached

WASHINGTON-The Public Safety community, Nextel Communications Inc. and The Private Wireless Coalition said they have adopted a consensus strategy for mitigating interference in the 800 MHz band, according to joint reply comments filed today in the 800 MHz realignment proceeding.

The plan would split the 800 MHz band into two contiguous blocks of spectrum-a noncellularized block and a cellularized block. Public safety, Business/Industrial Land Transportation (B/ILT) and traditional specialized mobile radio licensees would remain in the noncellularized block and Nextel would relocate to a 16-megahertz cellularized block. A two-by-two guard band would be created in the noncellularized block at 814 MHz to 816 MHz and 859 MHz to 861 MHz for low-power systems and other B/ILT licensees.

The proposal also calls for a five-year period during which public-safety entities can acquire the remaining channels vacated by Nextel in the noncellularized block.
