JAKARTA, Indonesia-Indonesia’s wireless market faces two opposite trends from the implementation of CDMA technology.
Four analog and CDMA operators, Komselindo, Mobisel, Metrosel, and Telesera, counted a 20.06-percent decrease in growth in subscriber numbers from 156,721 as of June last year to 125,280 subscribers as of June this year. However, during this period, Komselindo, a former AMPS operator further migrated to CDMA technology and experienced a decline in subscriber numbers from 61,300 to 44,899 subscribers. In addition, Mobisel, which is migrating from NMT 450 MHz technology to CDMA technology, also experienced a user decline from 11,809 subscribers to 8,168 subscribers.
Meanwhile, the country will likely soon experience significant growth in CDMA-based fixed-wireless services. An incumbent operator and two new entrants plan to speed up their access networks through fixed wireless.
Three licensed operators, Telkom, Ratelindo, and Indosat, will use CDMA 1x technology for fixed wireless services. By the end of the year, the three fixed operators will build out about 50,000 new CDMA-based lines out of more than 3 million total lines that will be installed within the next three years.
