Cell C maintains tariffs

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-South African mobile network operator Cell C announced it will not increase its call tariffs in the near future as it strives to gain market share from the incumbent operators Vodacom and MTN.

Talaat Laham, chief executive of the company, said the operator had reached its customer targets for the year with close to 800,000 subscribers, but this would not translate into an increase in tariffs.

“Cell C launched in November last year on the basis of providing easy-to-understand products that represented value. I am happy to announce that our launch tariffs will remain in place for the rest of the year,” he said.

The network claims to have the lowest base rates for prepaid and contract users, although the average revenue per user (ARPU) remains undisclosed.

The company did, however, state there would be a review of tariffs early in 2003.
