SAN DIEGO-Wireless enterprise company Wireless Knowledge, a Qualcomm Inc. subsidiary, confirmed it acquired the majority of rival Mobilocity’s assets, including some of the company’s top executives, intellectual properties and its wireless research and development facility.
“We are very pleased to have rolled up Mobilocity into Wireless Knowledge,” Eric Schultz, the company’s chief executive officer, told RCR Wireless News. “Mobilocity is no longer an independent entity.”
Schultz declined to offer financial details.
The exact status of Mobilocity has been unclear for more than a month. Repeated attempts to contact the company through a variety of channels have gone unanswered. The first indications that Wireless Knowledge was in deals with the company came in late July, when RCR Wireless News first reported that several top Mobilocity executives had relocated to Wireless Knowledge. Then, earlier this month, Wireless Knowledge announced it gained access to Mobilocity’s Mobility Lab, the company’s research and development facility. And yesterday, Mobilocity’s Web site began redirecting users to the Wireless Knowledge Web site.
Wireless Knowledge’s Schultz said the company is now looking to pick up Mobilocity’s customers. He said the addition of Mobilocity’s former executives and its intellectual properties will greatly improve Wireless Knowledge’s Strategic Consulting division and its position in the industry.
Schultz said he didn’t know what happened to digital branding and communications company KPE, which Mobilocity acquired in February.
Separately, Wireless Knowledge announced it appointed Joe Barone as vice president of engineering, where he will lead the company’s product strategy, software engineering and research and development efforts.
Barone previously worked for Microsoft Corp. Microsoft formed Wireless Knowledge through a joint venture with Qualcomm, and Qualcomm bought out Microsoft’s stake in the company late last year.
