DUBLIN, Ireland-While spam has yet to become a serious issue for its i-mode customers, KPN Mobile has made a pre-emptive strike on potential mass mailers by offering customers the option of deciding from whom they receive mail.
Customers can compile and update what is known as a “white list” on their handsets, and only messages from those on the list will be allowed through. E-mails from senders outside the approved list are rejected, and the customer is not billed for any message sent from an unapproved source.
The introduction of the white list expands KPN Mobile’s existing anti-spamming measures, even though the company has not yet received complaints from customers about junk or mass mail on their i-mode handsets. Users have been able to compose their own black lists since the introduction of the mobile e-mail service, which is currently being used by about 86 percent of KPN Mobile’s i-mode customers.
