Telkom Indonesia plans to divest non-GSM subsidiaries

JAKARTA, Indonesia-Telkom, Indonesia’s incumbent information and communication services carrier, has decided to divest its non-GSM subsidiaries.

Currently, Telkom has five cellular subsidiaries-Telkomsel, a GSM operator; Komselindo and Mobisel, CDMA operators; and Metrosel and Telesera, AMPS carriers.

Kristiono, chief executive officer (CEO) of Telkom, said this strategic move will help maintain the operator’s market dominance in its only positive-growth line of business. Telkomsel counted 99.48-percent growth in terms of subscriber numbers in its first-half results this year. Excluding Telesera, the rest of its mobile subsidiaries hit negative growth in terms of subscriber numbers. Komselindo saw subscribers decline 26.76 percent, Mobisel users decreased 30.83 percent, Metrosel declined 16.3 percent and Telesera’s client numbers increased 8.87 percent.

In addition, Telkom’s cellular businesses contributed about 34 percent of Telkom’s total revenue in the first half of this year. Telkomsel, which will be the only Telkom cellular business, contributed more than 90 percent of Telkom’s cellular revenue.

Kristiono added that the plan would be in effect in the near future.
