SAN JOSE, Calif.-Describing the product introduction as networks in motion, Cisco Systems Inc. has rolled out a new mobile access router that will work in airplanes, ships, tanks and trains, raising the stakes for ubiquitous data coverage in the wireless world.
“Enabled by standards-based mobile IP, the Cisco 3200 series extends the edge of the IP network, delivering new, mission-critical applications for the defense, public safety and commercial transportation markets,” said the company in a press release, adding that it connects not just individual clients but whole networks.
Analysts see this as one of the gradual measures the San Jose, Calif.-based vendor is adopting to challenge some of the mainstays of the industry like Nokia Corp., L.M. Ericsson and Siemens AG.
Not only will all the verticals benefit from this gear, it will serve as a huge revenue stream to the industry, bringing billions of dollars in the long run, according to Cisco.
The company says the router addresses the challenges of roaming, scalability, network security and interoperability.
“We believe the Cisco 3200 series mobile access router is a key enabler to extend our network connectivity from existing ground-based IP networks and applications to in-flight IP networks,” said Bernhard Conrad, senior vice president engineering and production completion center and head of approved design organization at Lufthansa Technik. “And since this is a standards-based solution, we are not locked into a proprietary system, which means we have greater flexibility for our customers to add new applications and incorporate future technologies.”
In another announcement, Cisco unveiled its Aironet 1100 series IEEE 802.11b wireless local area network access point.
