MUNICH, Germany-Siemens said African operator Vodacom will install Openwave Systems Inc.’s multimedia messaging service platform as part of the operator’s GSM/GPRS network. Vodacom licensed Openwave’s equipment through Siemens, which is responsible for the overall project management and integration of the MMS solution into Vodacom’s network.
“In the third quarter, we plan to launch cellular phones equipped with digital cameras that will enable photos to be sent from phone to phone,” said Alan Knott Craig, Vodacom chief executive officer. He said the carrier’s MMS pricing will be similar to its short message service fees.
Vodacom offers mobile services in South Africa, Tanzania, Lesotho and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It also holds a GSM license in Mozambique.
