ABI says ultra-wideband needs standard to reach potential

WASHINGTON-Ultra-wideband technology will not meet its full potential without a definable standard, according to a report released last week by Allied Business Intelligence, a think tank based in Oyster Bay, N.Y.

More than “900 companies have filed concerns of [UWB] its use and still the [Federal Communications Commission] has allowed it. And letters of concern still are rolling into the FCC. Until a standard is set where all communications segments are satisfied this technology will have problems,” said Paul Marcik, ABI analyst.

Calls to UWB companies were not returned.

Marcik wrote the report, “UWB Wireless-An Evaluation of Technology Prospects and Potential Market Applications.” The report estimates that total global shipments of UWB-enabled electronics and chipsets could reach 45.1 million units by 2007 resulting in revenues of $1.39 billion.
