Uzbek carrier to launch CDMA 450 MHz network

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan-The Uzbektelecom landline national operator received a CDMA 450 MHz license and launched the construction of a wireless network with a capacity of 150,000 clients.

The Chinese company Huawei is to supply equipment worth US$200,000 for the pilot project in the Dzhizak region of the country.

Uzbektelecom will thus become the seventh carrier in the Central Asian republic, where existing operators run AMPS, GSM and CDMA 800 MHz networks.

The Uzbek government is planning to sell 51 percent of the carrier to a foreign investor.

The number of mobile clients in Uzbekistan with a population of 25 million jumped 43.9 percent to 162,100 people in the first half of the year compared with the same period of 2001.
