WATERLOO, Ontario, Canada-Research In Motion (RIM) said it has signed an agreement in principal with Palm setting out fundamental terms under which RIM will license certain keyboard patents to Palm under a royalty-bearing licensing agreement. Financial terms of the agreement were not released.
Palm said it would use the keyboard technology in its upcoming Tungsten W wireless handheld.
In addition, RIM and Nokia signed a software licensing agreement under which RIM granted Nokia the right to globally use and distribute certain BlackBerry software in conjunction with Nokia products.
The agreements come days after RIM announced a deal with personal digital assistant (PDA) manufacturer and Palm rival Handspring.
“RIM continues to license its patents and technologies to reputable companies to expand the market opportunities for its industry-leading research and development,” said Jim Balsillie, chairman and co-chief executive officer (CEO) of RIM.
