JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-Mobile network operator Celtel Uganda announced an initiative to double the company’s network coverage across the country.
Lars Andersen, managing director of Celtel Uganda, said the firm would invest an additional US$15 million during the next six months, extending coverage to 35 towns in the northern reaches of Uganda. The expansion plan will entail the installation of 90 new base stations from technology supplier Siemens.
Andersen added that Celtel has also entered talks with its subsidiary company Infocom, an Internet service provider (ISP), to reduce tariffs for subscribers.
Andersen said the operator has an estimated 40,000 subscribers on its network with current coverage extending to 32 towns in Uganda.
