Communist Party secretary of MII elected to elite Central Committee

BEIJING-Wang Xudong, the newly appointed Communist Party secretary of the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) and former secretary of Hebei Province, was elected 14 November to the party’s central committee.

It is almost certain he will succeed Wu Jichuan in March next year as the new minister of MII.

The central committee has 198 full members and 158 alternate members. General Secretary Jiang Zemin and five other members of the seven-man standing committee were not re-elected. The 76-year old Jiang will hand over the top slot to 59-year old Hu Jintao 15 November and relinquish his post of state president in March 2003.
