BONN, Germany-T-Mobile has expanded its U.S.-originated wireless local area network strategy to Europe, rolling out the service in hot spots in Germany and Austria.
The service is currently available in airports, hotels and cafes. In Austria, there are already 200 access points, operated in conjunction with partner Metronet. In Germany, the service is offered at the Munster/Osnabruck airport and in Ramada-Treff Group hotels in Bremen, Hanover and Cologne.
“The WLAN technology ideally complements our range of mobile data communication services that we already enable via GPRS and in the future will also enable via UMTS,” said Martin Knauer, head of marketing at T-Mobile Deutschland. “It is an important part of T-Mobile’s ‘Get more’ strategy.”
The operator first rolled out its WLAN service in the United States, and earlier this month T-Mobile USA announced agreements with American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines to provide Wi-Fi access in each airline’s clubs and lounges across the country. The T-Mobile HotSpot service is on target to be available in over 2,000 U.S. locations by year-end, with current availability in more than 1,800 locations, including Starbucks coffee houses, airports, airline clubs and, by early 2003, Borders bookstores and cafes.
