Proxim releases Wi-Fi access solution

NEW YORK-Proxim Corp., Sunnyvale, Calif., has made commercially available its ORiNOCO AP-2500, which it designed as a Wi-Fi option for large businesses that want to provide guest access and for small telecommunications carriers competing to serve business customers.

The AP-2500, which has a suggested retail price of $1,095, is designed with a dual-slot architecture to provide two kinds of access, one for employees that goes through the firewall and one for visitors that only provides Internet access.

The new access point also is targeted at smaller, regional telecommunications service providers, “which, til now, have had to support a large, metro solution and are looking for something more cost-effective for smaller geographic areas,” said Ken Haase, director of marketing and business development for Proxim’s broadband services division.

Small, independent retail establishments are another target market for the AP-2500, he said.
