Lucent Technologies Inc. says carrier Movilnet has launched its cdma2000 1x voice and data network using its equipment, software and services. “Movilnet’s subscribers will be able to access the cdma2000 network with cdma2000 1x cell phones or personal digital assistants and laptop PCs equipped with cdma2000 1x PC cards,” said Lucent.
Messaging company Logica plc deployed an intercarrier multimedia messaging service with an unnamed wireless carrier. The company said the service will allow users to send MMS messages across different networks, a capability many have pointed to as essential for any successful wireless messaging service.
Verizon Communications Inc. launched wireless local area network services in the Boston area allowing businesses to purchase equipment and services using either the 802.11b or 802.11a network standard from the carrier. The company said it plans to eventually roll out its WLAN service nationwide.
Telia’s mobile subscribers will be able to access Hotmail e-mail messages sent via short message service to their mobile phones under a new deal the operator signed with MSN, Microsoft’s Internet portal. MSN launched the service in Sweden, and it is open to Hotmail users with Telia mobile-phone subscriptions. The Hotmail e-mail service is also offered by operators in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. The service has been available since last December in Europe, and Asian rollouts are planned.
Treo mobile phone/personal digital assistant maker Handspring Inc. said it will sell its Treo 270 device in China through a new partnership with CEC Telecom Co. Ltd. and GrandTech. “The CECT Treo 270 is a great example of how Handspring can work with local distributors and manufacturers to tailor a product for the specific needs of a market,” said Joe Sipher, vice president of worldwide marketing for Handspring.
