TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo said it will decide in mid-December whether it will maintain its 15-percent interest in Dutch operator KPN Mobile by subscribing to further shares of the operator. KPN Mobile last week said it is planning to convert about $14 billion of shareholder loans from KPN Telecom into equity in its mobile division by end-2002.
To maintain its 15-percent stake in the operator, which has mobile subsidiaries in Germany and Belgium in addition to the Netherlands, NTT DoCoMo would have to invest more capital into the operator. NTT DoCoMo this year has had to write down billions of dollars due to the decline in value of its overseas investments.
