Sprint to cut 2,100 jobs

NEW YORK-Sprint Corp. said today it plans to eliminate about 2,100 jobs, or 3 percent of its work force, in response to the downturn in the long-distance telecommunications business.

The elimination of 1,000 employees will result from Sprint’s consolidation into a single unit of the computing, network and billing departments for global markets, local telephone and mobile communications divisions. Global markets also will lose another 300 jobs, local telephone an additional 450, and the corporate staff unit will lose 300.

Sprint expects to save $145 million annually as a result of the work force reductions, of which it will include $95 million in the parent corporation’s operating results and the remainder in Sprint PCS’ results. The company said it will take a pre-tax charge of $85 million this quarter related to employee severance costs, of which $55 million will be charged to Sprint and the rest to Sprint PCS.
