WASHINGTON-A new Pentagon report said spectrum loss to the wireless industry is hurting military capability and has forced it “to pursue proactive approaches that would prevent future erosion of critical government EM [electromagnetic] spectrum.”
The Department of Defense is currently battling with Microsoft Corp. and Silicon Valley heavyweights over the latter’s push for additional unlicensed spectrum in the 5 GHz band on a global scale. DoD has warned that allowing the proposal to go forward could create disruptions from wireless devices to military radar. The Pentagon also is working with the mobile phone industry on a Bush administration initiative to free up military spectrum for third-generation wireless systems.
