India’s CorDECT reaches 1 million installed base, to supplement CDMA

NEW DELHI, India-The number of wireless local loop (WLL) lines installed using CorDECT technology, developed by an Indian group, has reached 1 million. In addition, orders worth Rs 1 billion rupees (US$20.7 million) have been received and are under execution.

Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, head of the telecom group at the Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai, gave this information to Global Wireless on the sidelines of a research and development (R&D) meeting here this week. This group developed the technology and transferred it to a spinoff-Midas Communications Technology-for commercialization. Midas has licensed four Indian manufacturers.

CorDect networks are spread throughout India and in several developing countries in Africa and Latin America. Recently, the company won an order from Egypt.

Reliance Infocomm, a basic service licensee, is said to have finalized a deal for about 1 million lines with Midas. The company, slated to launch its WLL services in several telecom circles this month, will deploy CorDect in addition to CDMA.
