BEIJING-China Netcom and China Telecom, China’s main fixed-line operators, are considering building wireless local loop (WLL) services based on the CDMA standard, but mobile operator China Unicom is expected to complain to the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) that it was designated the country’s only CDMA service provider.
U.S.-based Crestar International is reportedly in talks with the two fixed-line carriers. Asif Qureshi, the company’s president and chief executive officer (CEO), told Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post the only difference between a CDMA wireless network and a CDMA WLL network is regulation. If successful, the fixed-line carriers would gain a back door to the mobile-phone market while waiting for the issuance of 3G licenses.
Current limited mobility personal access system services are known as “xiaolintong” in China and are mainly based on equipment supplied by UTStarcom.
