TOKYO-Sony Communication Network (SCN), a subsidiary of Sony Corporation, is going to launch PHS packet services and wireless local area network (WLAN) services in February, the firm announced. According to SCN, the Sony firm will launch a flat-rate PHS service as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) using DDI Pocket’s PHS networks in Japan.
The monthly rate for its 128 kilobits per second (kbps) service costs 8,500 yen (US$71), while its 32 kbps service costs 5,300 yen (US$44). The WLAN service will be provided in cooperation with NTT Communications Corp, an NTT Group company.
Users of the service would be offered two options: a monthly flat rate program for 1,400 yen (US$12) a month or a meter charging program at 10 yen (US$0.08) per minute. SCN and Sony Corporation will launch joint marketing to promote broadband networks.
