Motorola nearly catches Nokia in U.S. handset sales

FALLS CHURCH, Va.-Nokia Corp. managed to hold a .5 percent lead over Motorola Inc. in the United States handset market over the past year, according to numbers from Telecom Trends International.

Of the 72 million handsets sold in the United States in 2002, Nokia scored a market share of 26.5 percent, while Motorola had 26 percent. Nokia’s numbers dipped slightly from previous years while Motorola managed to increase share, due to the success of its v.60 series phones and the launch of its T720.

Asian manufacturers Samsung, Kyocera, and LG made inroads in the market, while Sony Ericsson and Audiovox faced significant declines, according to the research company.
