North American carriers implement intercarrier text messaging

WASHINGTON, D.C.-The Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association and the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association announced cross-border, inter-carrier text messaging services enabling text messaging between customers of major U.S. and Canadian wireless service providers have been launched.

Participating are Canadian service providers Bell Mobility, Microcell Solutions (Fido), Rogers AT&T Wireless and Telus Mobility, as well as regional carriers Aliant Mobility, Manitoba Telecom Services (MTS) and SaskTel Mobility, and U.S. carriers AT&T Wireless Services Inc., Cingular Wireless L.L.C., Nextel Communications Inc., Sprint PCS, T-Mobile USA Inc. and Verizon Wireless Inc.

To promote the service, Verizon and Telus have released a list of text messaging phrases their customers can share, and both companies are offering text messaging service packages at discounted prices for a limited time.

An agreement between inter-carrier messaging solution provider InphoMatch Inc. and global solutions company LogicaCMG enabled the solution.
