NAIROBI, Kenya-The Kenyan government has released a tender for a third GSM license in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands. Award of the tender is expected in July.
Interested companies are invited to submit prequalification packages by 3 April.
Kenya currently has two mobile operators, Kencel Communications, owned 60 percent by Sameer Investments and 40 percent by Vivendi, and SafariCom, owned 60 percent by Telekom Kenya and 40 percent by Vodafone. SafariCom has about 350,000 subscribers, and Kencel has about 300,000.
