DENVER-As he demonstrated the strength of Palm Inc.’s new product, the Tungsten W PDA phone, senior product manager Stephane Maes showed how the market has segmented over the past few years. Palm recently visited RCR Wireless News to preview the new device the company is releasing to the public today.
The mobile device marketed can be segmented into the traditional PDA, the two-piece wireless data PDA, the integrated wireless data PDA with telephony, the voice-centric PDA with data capability, the high-end mobile phone with enhanced PIM capability and the traditional mobile phone.
“This is high-end, and more of a PDA than a phone,” he said, referring to the Tungsten W, noting that the new product has all the voice capabilities offered on a GSM/GPRS network today.
The sleek, color mobile device has a built-in keyboard, one-handed navigation capability and supports personal and corporate e-mail, VPN access, SMS and chat messaging, as well as browsing on a high-resolution HTML browser and using WAP technology. Tungsten W enables easy dialing from the address book as it enjoys a pop-up dialog box when a call comes in.
The PDA phone accommodates the Adobe Acrobat Reader, AvantGo interactive and personalized content and applications, a voice-to-text transcription service with Copytalk and a DataViz application to view, edit and create Microsoft Word and Excel documents and share PowerPoint presentations. It also has all PIM applications, such as address book, date book, clock, to-do list, memo pad, calculator, expense and note pad.
Maes said the PDA is built for multitasking, with the flexibility to allow the user to speak to one person and send e-mail to another person. It also contains a tri-band radio for international travel and roaming.
The phone will operate on networks from Vodafone Group plc, AT&T Wireless Services Inc., Rogers AT&T and SingTel.
