PARIS-Alcatel announced two new mobile infrastructure contracts, one in Latin America and one in Europe.
In Argentina, Telecom Personal, a subsidiary of Telecom Argentina, contracted Alcatel to extend its GSM/GPRS 1900 MHz network. The extension should be completed by mid-2003 and will allow Telecom Personal to offer better-quality services than currently available, including international roaming and new mobile Internet services, in the Mendoza city area.
Alcatel also said it will expand the GSM network of Ukrainian operator Ukrainian Mobile Communications. Ericsson won a contract with UMC competitor Kyivstar earlier this week.
The value of the two Alcatel contracts were not disclosed, although the French vendor called the UMC contract a “multimillion euro” award.
