TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo, the leading mobile carrier in Japan, will launch flat-rate PHS service in April, NTT DoCoMo said Thursday. DDI Pocket, a PHS operator of KDDI Group, launched Japan’s first flat-rate PHS service in mid-2001.
Winning support from mainly business people, DDI Pocket’s service, called “Air Edge,” has won 700,000 users. NTT DoCoMo so far has been providing only meter-charge service. In April, NTT DoCoMo will launch the flat-rate service with the monthly charge of 4,000 yen (US$34).
Meanwhile, DDI Pocket, the largest PHS operator in Japan, in April will launch a new service called “Air Edge Phone,” which will let users use their PHS terminals for both data transmission and voice services.
