JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-Mobile network operator Celtel Uganda recently increased its coverage to the eastern districts of Kumi, Pallisa, Kapchorwa, Iganga, Bugiiri and Kamuli.
Michael Werikhe, the minister for communications, said the government appreciated the role played by telecommunications operators in the country’s development. “I have noted Celtel’s record in the area of international roaming, and it demonstrates a commitment to linking Uganda to the rest of the world,” said Werikhe.
However, a slight drama occurred in the middle of the minister’s speech, as a small whirlwind suddenly blew across the grounds sweeping aside all the tents and chairs. Celtel officials used the event to their advantage, saying it was a sign God approved of the network expansion.
Lars Anderssen, Celtel managing director, said the company’s vision was to increase service delivery to its subscribers while offering more in the way of enhanced services. “We have decided to ensure that our services are affordable and of high quality,” he said.
Richard Mugera, Celtel’s marketing and communications manager, added: “We’ve become more responsive and aggressive on the market. We take quick decisions on the things that the market asks for. That’s why we reduced our rates, that’s why we’ve slashed service fees and that’s why we are in a bid to expand throughout Uganda.”
Celtel has announced it will continue to expand its coverage of the country with the next districts slated as Lira, Gulu, Nebbi, Paraa, Kabale, Fort Portal, and Kisoro.
