SURABAYA, Indonesia—Singapore mobile operator StarHub joined 5G and Bluengine to form Singapore’s first marketing partnership initiative for wireless broadband. This Wi-Fi initiative aims to develop a convenient and uniform roaming service, which allows any of the three companies’ customers to use any hot spots managed by the three operators.
Under the agreement, StarHub, 5G and Bluengine will work toward a six-point plan ranging from co-marketing activities to technical support for seamless roaming in the country. Currently, the three operators have completed the technical specifications of the local roaming service, which is expected to be available by mid-June this year.
With the roaming service implemented, customers will be able to connect wirelessly at more than 180 locations throughout Singapore. These include StarHub’s hubs at Changi Airport and Suntec City, Singapore’s two largest wireless broadband hubs.
Kyong Yu, senior vice president of StarHub Interactive, said wireless broadband is growing rapidly in Singapore and worldwide and the company is proud to be a pioneer and leader in implementing and delivering extensive wireless broadband hubs in Singapore.
Wireless broadband uses the 802.11b wireless protocol to deliver high-speed Internet speeds for users with Wi-Fi-enabled laptops or personal digital assistants (PDA). While this initiative is still maturing, StarHub’s wireless broadband team said it invites other wireless operators to join the marketing partnership initiative.
On Wednesday, Singapore telecom regulator Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) announced a Wi-Fi collaboration with Intel (see IDA collaborates with Intel on Wi-Fi program).
