BEIJING-UTStarcom is expected to launch a dual-mode handset in May, capable of operating on the Little Smart networks of fixed-line operators and on the GSM networks of the wireless carriers.
The launch of the handset may provide another impetus to the Little Smart services of China Netcom and China Telecom, for which UTStarcom is supplying the bulk of network equipment.
Being able to use the Little Smart service in the city of residence and the GSM service when traveling will make Little Smart more attractive. Little Smart does not allow for roaming between cities, but offers a significantly cheaper service than GSM.
