JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-Zambian President Mwanawasa recently inaugurated the Zamtel GSM link in Chipata with a call to the operator to begin offering affordable prepaid tariffs.
The system has been commissioned to enhance regional cooperation among Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi because subscribers would no longer need to go through their capital cities.
The Chinese ambassador to Zambia, Peng Keyu, who attended the event, praised the Zambian government’s New Deal policies that he said had rapidly developed the telecommunications industry.
Keyu added that the GSM project in Chipata is a joint venture between the governments of China and Zambia and that it would be able to offer service to the eastern provinces of Zambia, as well as the mineral-rich area of the Copperbelt.
