WASHINGTON-The U.S. House of Representatives has issued a subpoena to the administrator of the Internet schools and libraries program for clean records related to the House Commerce Committee’s investigation of E-rate management.
The House Commerce Committee said it was necessary to serve a subpoena on Cheryl Parrino, chief executive of the Universal Service Administration Co., because many of the documents previously submitted by the organization contained information that was omitted because of confidentiality concerns.
House Commerce Committee Chairman Billy Tauzin (R-La.), who signed the subpoena yesterday, said he has asked oversight and investigations subcommittee Chairman James Greenwood (R-Pa.) to hold hearings on an E-rate program that costs $2.25 billion a year. The program gives schools and libraries discounted Internet connections, including those made possible by mobile and fixed wireless connections.
