Nextel Partners adds more customers, ARPU drops

KIRKLAND, Wash.-Nextel Partners Inc. reported 86,800 net subscriber additions during the first quarter of this year, which was ahead of the 85,200 customers the carrier added during the first quarter of 2002. Nextel Partners said it ended the latest quarter with 964,600 total customers.

Average revenue per user dropped from $68 during the first quarter of last year to $65 this year while customer churn increased from 1.6 percent last year to 1.7 percent during the first three months of this year.

Despite the decline in ARPU, total revenues increased from $133.2 million during the first quarter of 2002 to $207.8 million this year. Net losses attributed to shareholders dropped from $91.7 million during the first quarter of 2002, a loss of 38 cents per share, to $50.2 million this year, a loss of 20 cents per share.
