DUBLIN, Ireland-Vodafone Ireland said it opened its third-generation network, although it will initially be available only to several “key business partners.” The network provides data speeds of up to 144 kilobits per second, enabling faster downloads and enhanced voice capacity than current services, the operator said.
The early users will offer feedback on their experiences with the service, including coverage, second-generation to 3G interworking and data speeds. They will be equipped with a limited number of Nokia 6650 handsets.
As larger volumes of handsets become available, Vodafone said it will make the 3G service available to all customers.
Vodafone Ireland has more than one-third population coverage with the UMTS network, in all the main urban centers. The second phase of its 3G network buildout is under way.
Tele2 earlier this week also soft launched its UMTS network in Luxembourg. The Irish launch is Vodafone Group plc’s first 3G launch outside its J-Phone subsidiary in Japan.
