RESTON, Va.-Wireless data carrier Motient Corp. scored reselling agreements with two of the nation’s largest wireless carriers, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA Inc., moves that follow up on the company’s promises to expand its wireless offerings.
Under its deal with Verizon, Motient will act as a National Master Agent for the carrier’s CDMA 1xRTT network and will be the first Verizon agent to offer wireless e-mail services from BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. Motient said the move is part of its strategy to offer services beyond its slower-speed, data-only network, and that it will sell data products and value-added programs to software companies, systems integrators and value-added resellers, agents and dealers nationwide.
Motient’s deal with T-Mobile follows much the same lines; Motient will resell the carrier’s GSM/GPRS network to corporate users, as well as RIM’s GPRS BlackBerry devices.
“By tapping into the next generation of wireless data solutions available through T-Mobile’s advanced networks, we can demonstrate that Motient is committed to the state-of-the-art wireless data applications that enterprise customers demand,” said Dan Croft, Motient’s senior vice president of business development and marketing.
In an interview with RCR Wireless News late last year, Croft first indicated Motient planned to expand its offerings by reselling voice and data services from other carriers. Croft said the move was necessary in an evolving industry. And in a further effort to face the challenges of such an industry, Motient earlier this year announced it scored a $12.5 million credit facility with its investors. The company said the funds would help it reach break even by early next year.
