NEW YORK-Verizon Communications Inc. activated 150 of a planned 1,000 Wi-Fi transmission stations throughout New York City, which the company said would allow its Verizon Online customers to have access to high-speed Internet services up to 300 feet from the so-called Verizon HotSpots located in select public telephones.
Verizon said the service would be available for no additional charge to its current customers and that enabled locations would be marked with a red and black Verizon Wi-Fi HotSpots symbol.
James Otterback, senior vice president of emerging markets for Verizon, said the company would use the initial Wi-Fi rollout to evaluate the possibility of expanding the HotSpots to additional markets in the future.
Verizon Wireless announced at this year’s Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association show that it planned to rollout its own Wi-Fi offering to its customers this year in 10 airports through an agreement with public hot spot aggregator Wayport Inc.
