Pannon makes EDGE call

HELSINKI, Finland-Hungarian operator Pannon GSM Telecommunications plc announced it made a successful call using an EDGE phone and network. The carrier also said it will use equipment from Nokia Corp. to launch a trial EDGE network in Budapest in the third quarter of this year.

Nokia said the call was the first such successful test of EDGE equipment in Europe. The company said DTAC in Thailand and Smart in the Philippines have also made EDGE calls using Nokia equipment.

Although long disparaged, EDGE technology seems to be making a slow comeback, following the massive hype surrounding third-generation wireless technology. AT&T Wireless Services Inc. recently became the first carrier in the world to commercially sell EDGE phones. AT&T Wireless said its EDGE network will be ready for launch by the end of this year.
