NEW DELHI, India-Siemens AG announced a strong push into the India mobile market Wednesday, launching six new mobile phones into the country, which has a large population and low mobile penetration rate.
In addition, the German supplier said it would increase its engineers in its Bangalore research and development center from 400 to 500. The company also said a partnership with Tech Pacific, India’s biggest information technology wholesaler, will ensure Siemens phones are available in more than 2,000 shops throughout the country.
Siemens said it introduced the low-end A55 phone, along with the SX1 smart phone. Several of the phones are equipped with Hindi-language menus.
At the end of April, India had 13.3 million cellular subscribers. “Limited mobility” service providers offering wireless local loop service are readying launches across the country and will compete directly with India’s GSM players.
Siemens has also been aggressive in China, the world’s largest wireless market, by taking the lead in conjunction with Chinese vendor Datang on TD-SCDMA third-generation technology.
